The Shot Tower

March 27, 2002

Located at the end of East Fourth Street, the Shot Tower was built in 1856 and used commercially for three years to make lead shot and bullets. It was later used by a lumber company as a watch tower to spot fires. In 1911 the second of two fires in the lumber yard destroyed the interior woodwork and the top of this shot tower. This is the only shot tower in the United States west of the Mississippi River.
